A friend of mine is buying a house under contract for deed. He and the landowner have a verbal contract and he took pocession of the property, he was to pay for the property under a set time and that time has not passed yet. The property owner is upset becuase he sold three old motorcycles that were in the barn on the property. My friend told me the guy said they went with the house and the owner says he told my friend to hold off on doing anything with them because he thought he had a buyer. Did my friend do anything illegal?

If the arrangement is not in writing, and the motorcycles were registered or titled in someone else's name, yeah, he might have done something illegal.

Your friend should get a contract IN WRITING and it should spell out what is his and what is not. Depending on the value of the motorcycles and the level of stink raised, your friend may want to consult an attorney, or, consider paying the previous owner off for the value of the motorcycles.

A VERBAL contract is only as enforceable as the air it is printed on if the parties disagree as to the content of said verbal contract.
