Last summer I worked a seasonal job, working in a warehouse in a remote area. While employed there I started to have some strange medical issues. Numbness in extremities, weakness and difficulty walking to name the more major of them. Because of the remoteness and no medical insurance I was unable to find a cause. Luckily my immediate supervisor was very understanding and allowed me to continue working. Toward the end of the season her supervisor came in for an inspection, saw my strange gait and decided I should not drive, no problem there, was a good decision as far as I was concerned. I finished out the season, was told by my supervisor that I would be eligible for rehire, and made my way back to civilization.

Ultimately I found that I had a bulging disc in my spine at the neck. I had surgery and the problem is fixed. I have been cleared to go back to work full force by my doctor.

I contacted my former supervisor and let her know I was interested in returning to work there again. She said great and said she was going to call her supervisor to see when she could rehire me. I called her a few days later and she informed me that her supervisor voiced concerns about my "condition" on whether I could perform the duties of the job. I let her know that I could have my doctor fax something to them releasing me for full work functions. She said she would let me know if that was necessary. It is now a month later. I have tried to contact her several times via e-mail and phone with no response from her.

What is my recourse here?

Well, not quite. But I do agree that if they are not interested in rehiring you they are not obligated to do so.
