I ordered a school book online to be delivered via standard mail. I recieved the envelope about 1 week later, but it had been cut open and was empty. I spoke with the manager of the post office and she said if they receive an open envelope, they stamp it, that it's been opened, before delivering it. There is no stamp on it. They said it's not there responsability. The book I ordered is huge, it would not fit in the mailbox. Manager said they would have put it next to the mailbox (which is on the sidewalk) or next to my front door. My roommate got the mail that day, and the envelope was inbetween the rest of the mail. Did someone find the package next to the mailbox or the door, cut it open with some scissors, take out the book and then put the envelope in the mailbox? I thought the post office left a note when the object was too big for the mailbox for you to pick it up at the post office. How can they leave a package next to the sidewalk? Is there nothing I can do about this?

Find out if the company you bought the book from sent the book via insured mail to you. If that is the case, you can file an insurance claim with the post office.

It was not insured. I chose the cheapest option because I'm a starving student, single mom, etc.. Well, now I know it would have been better to have skipped breakfast and paid the extra money. I just didn't think the post office could do something like that. Thanks for your response.
