Problems with my supervisor

I work for the city as an at will employee. I have been working for my department for two years. For the last 20 months I've been working under a supervisor who I feel has been very unfair towards me and other employees. I was going to quickly describe some of the incidents that have occured under her and I hope that you can give me any sort of advice on where to go from here.

In June of 07, the department had an End of the Year banquet. I did not attend the event. I was under the impression it was optional. I was given a Letter of Counseling. My coworker, who also did not attend did not recieve a letter. Several other people who have the same job as me, but are under different supervisors also did not recieve a letter for not not attending.

In February of 08, I went to pick up my check approximately 15 minutes before work. They keep the checks in a bin in a seperate room from the main office. I walk in and I see no bin. I asked my supervisor where the bin was and she said she had put it up and that I was going to be late to my site. Nothing else is said. We exchange a few glances and I got real uncomfortable and just left to my job site without getting my check. I ended up picking it up the a couple of days later.

In April of 08, my supervisor comes into my work and asks my coworker and I if we would like to work at the City's annual summer camps, and we agree. My coworker and I had worked the camps last year. A couple of weeks ago, my coworker informs me that my supervisor had told her, while they were hanging out, that she was thinking of not letting me work the camps. The training began this week and I was not told of it. It seems that she decided weeks ago that I was not going to be a part of the camp. I recieved no phone calls or communication about this.

Is she in breach of an oral agreement? My coworker was present when I was asked to work the summer camp and I had been counting on working these two camps to help me through the summer (since my job is only available during the school year)

Several of my coworkers are very hesistant to come forward about anything because of being "targeted" by our supervisor. Our at will status allows for her to fire us at anytime without cause.

I appreciate any advice/information and thanks for your time.

Your supervisor's lack of professional attitude needs to be addressed by the HR department. You need to find out with your HR how you should proceed, first informally and then, if no improvement, formally when it comes to filing a formal complaint. Good Luck!

Presutin seems to be under the impression that any behavior you don't like can be the subject of a formal complaint resulting in disciplinary action against the supervisor. He or she is mistaken.

HR is under no obligation to take any action against a supervisor for an attitude you don't, no matter how unprofessional, unless the supervisor is found to have violated the law. Which, based on your post, has not occurred.

You are free to report it. HR is free to disregard your report.

The previous poster does not know that my specialty is HR so it is not just how the law sees it but how company policies are written when it comes to mutual respect and sexual harrasment policies. Follow the chain of command written on the company's policies and you should be in good shape. If not, you have it all documented and that can be used against the company if you decide to file suit against it with the proper agencies. Good Luck!

I have been working in HR for over 25 years. Don't presume to tell me how it works, please.
