I am a Professional Executive Administrative Assistant to the President/CEO of a Florida non-profit. I make $37,000 a year and have been at the job for 18 months with stellar performance reviews. I am required to "dress in professional business attire".
Now, due to a financial crunch, the agency has canceled the cleaning service and is asking ALL employees to sign up to mop floors, empty garbage, even clean public areas, including public toilet facilities. We are asked to sign up for two "chores" three times a week. Is this legal? If I refuse to participate can I be fired for not cleaning public toilets?

Yes, it is legal and yes, you can be fired for refusing.

It may or may not be the best utilization of resources but an employer may legally ask an employee to do anything that is not illegal or unsafe by OSHA standards, and unless the employee has a legally binding contract or CBA that SPECIFICALLY says they cannot be asked to do anything beyond the duties spelled out in the contract, refusal is insubordination, which is a firing offense.
