I had been getting help from an organization that has promised me and my electric provider to pay a bill by dates. They have pushed the date back to today (originally three weeks ago was the date payment was to be made). They did not pay it on time and therefore my electric has been turned off. It is a Friday, I do not have the money to pay the bill and now the disconnect fees to have it restored Monday (earliest) and the organization is ignoring me. I would like to do something leaglly if that is possible. I am going to have to put out money for a hotel or somewhere to stay over the weekend, plus all sorts of extra fees and the electric bill, when they had promised to pay. What can I do if anything?

Nothing, they had no obligation to pay your electric bill.

You used the electricity, you are legally obligated to pay your bill.

Even if the promise was in writing? They had me and them sign documents, and emailed the electric provider taking responsibility for that month of service.

Yes, even if.

It was as you say, a promise, not a contract.

A promise a contract does not make.

A promise is but one part of a contract, but it alone is not a contract.

Maybe the organization will yet pay.

Have you contacted them?

What are they saying?

Maybe the organization is broke, too.

This depression is affecting lots of people.

Maybe it affected their ability to help needy people?

They have said for a month and a half they will pay it, yet still nothing and today was the final day. The electric povider said it was their responsibility. Yet I am not sure since I do not have the paper in front of me whether it is a contract or not.

If your power is off, then it is a mistake by Big Sparky (they make a million of 'em), or the agency hasn't paid.

Maybe, by Monday, you can fix it.

Now, enjoy a quiet weekend at the hotel.

At least you aren't homeless, and you aren't begging.

Remember, hundreds of people will sleep on the streets tonight!

God bless!
