Hello - I recently had a friend who was terminated from the position of teacher aide at a nursery school. The nusery school board sent a letter home with all of the children telling them that she had been fired and providing three reasons why she was fired. Is this legal? Thanks.

Barring a bona fide contract or CBA that specifically says otherwise, there are no laws making a termination or the reasons thereof confidential. Legally, the employer can take out a billboard on Rte 95 if they want to.

Whether it is good management or not is another question. But no laws make bad management illegal, either.

Thanks for the quick response. Wow! Let me ask you this then...If it is not illegal, then why do you never hear about someone doing something like this? There must be a law of some kind which deters employers from announcing to the public the flaws of one of their employees? We're not talking about someone who abused children, but rather someone who made some honest financial mistakes.

No, there doesn't have to be a law, and there isn't one. You don't hear about it happening because most employers don't publicize the information. It's not good management to do so and it's not courteous. That doesn't make it illegal for them to do so.
