I purchase a 1992 lexis for $1400. I only gave the man $700 do to him not having the title in hand but he promised it's in the mail and will arrive tomorrow. So now a year has gone and past still no title and the man is back and demanding me to pay him the other $700 and he still don't have the title and is now threatening me and claims he's going to come take the car. What's the best option for me in this situation? Please advise me. I also have a bill sale sign from the man states Im the new owner of the vehicle

My God, why would you pay a guy for something he was unable to prove he owns?

That said, I wouldn't give him anything until he produced the title, a valid title.

Even then, I'd meet with him at the DMV, have DMV validate the title, get it properly signed off and transferred, and THEN and ONLY THEN would I give him the $700.

GENERAL WARNING: Please people, slow down, stop being stupid. Stop acting on false promises. This is money we're talking. Don't fall for lies, fall for REAL money.

Wake up, please.

He cannot claim ownership to repossess a vehicle he does not own. Immediately file in court for return of your $700.

That's true, D.

But, how would you or I know (assuming we'd ever buy a car that way), that the car isn't stolen?

As with most of these issues here, me thinks details are missing.

I'd never give some dude I found on Craigslist $7.00 (much less $700) to purchase a car before I have proven the title to be legitimate.

For all we know, Some Dude could be trying to jump title.

Or, Some Dude could be peddling a hot car, not a Hot Wheels miniature, either. LOL
