re: will timeline

my wealthy friend died suddenly at a young age in early June. He had told me for years that I was a beneficiary of his will. I know that the will had been redone early this spring and other beneficiaries were removed and my portion was to be increased. His family has had financial planners handling most of his investments for many years. When I spoke with the advisors after the funeral, I was told that at some point, I would "need to speak with them on a professional level" regarding my inheritance. I've not heard anything more from them since. My question is, how long is it before the will must be read per NY state law? I don't know if the newer will was finalized so I'd like to know the details to see if I should contest (I think his wealthier sister believes she is due the entire estate).
