Last week i received a citation/summons for trying on nail polish at a grocery store in Pennsylvania. I put the nail polish back on the shelf and walked to the register where I paid for all of my items. Then after i paid for my items 2 women called me into the back office to tell me i had to pay for the nail polish i tried on, i told them I would. Then they asked for my license. After that I became very upset because i couldnt understand why i would need to hand over my license for trying on a swipe of nail polish after agreeing to pay for the items. Teh young lady then began to ask me questions like what is my date of birth (which is clearly on my license). I said to her i am not telling you what my date of birth is its on my license. She then said "well it could be a fake license". I also told her that I shop here regularly and spend a lot of money in this store, to which she answered to the other lady in the room "yet it says she only saved $67.00 this year so far". The audacity of this woman. I was appalled and also was upset b/c my children were waiting at daycare which had already closed. I became so upset that i asked her for my license back and she didn't want to give it to me. Then i tried to grab it from her because I felt like my rights were clearly being violated and I was being treated like a criminal. She then called the police because she felt threatened by me. The police handcuffed me and put me in a police car to go get finger printed. I am thinking about suing and making this a civil rights case and I am speaking with a Lawyer at this time. I have no prior record of anything and this is embarassing and i am worried about this going on my record when looking for future jobs this can affect me. I do not steal and i feel this is extremely absurd.
My question to all of you is what would you do?
