My son received a reckless driving ticket (81/55) in VA. Should he take a driver improvement class before court? Does he need an attorney? He is 19 and this is his first moving violation.

An attorney is your best bet in VA for 26 over and will save $$$ in the long run.

26 over is right at the threshold for strict punishment up to an including a few weekend in jail so he really does not want another ticket the next three years.

Virginia Reckless Driving

A lot depends on the particular court. The northern Virginia counties around Fairfax are pretty tough on reckless driving. Some of the others are a little more leinient, especially if he is still in school and can show a good school record and he will need a certified copy of his MVR.

Fines are usually in the area of 500 to 1000 and even if it is reduced to speeding it could still be a six point violation and his auto insurance might be cancelled. If it is not cancelled then it will drastically increase. Usually an attorney is your best bet but there are no guarantees in court. You may want to go and sit in on a session to see what the judge does.

Should he take a driver improvement class before court?

You can take an online school and earn five safe driver points. Couldn't hurt. Since he is 19 he will have to physically attend traffic school after the citation is reported to the DMV.
