Our company had a major reduction in force last September. However, our department received letters asking us to stay on until the end of January. We were promised a retention bonus on top of our severance if we stay until then. A while later we were asked to stay on until the end of May with an additional retention bonus. We received a new letter that said "we would like you to stay until May 29th" and that outlined the additional weeks we would be paid for staying. Now, however, it appears that the company won't need us that long. Will they still have to honor what was outlined in the letter and pay us the bonus as if we worked until the end of May? There is nothing in the letter that mentions what will happen if the company decides that they don't need us anymore before the end of May.

You will have to show all the documentation to an attorney in your state. There's no possible way we can interpret the legality or enforceability of an agreement we have not read.
