i was renting an apartment in rhode island, and the rent that i paid was for the following month. my rent was on time, i did not owe any back rent and I had always been a good and non-disruptive tenant that had caused no damage to the property. the landlords had been inside the unit numerous times while i was renting it. my rent was due on the 18th of every month, and in may i had mailed them a check in advance because i was going out of town. the check was cashed on the 15th of may. on the 18th, the day that the rent was due, the building burned down and i lost everything. when i last spoke to one of the landlords and politely asked for my security and last months rent i was told that he can "probably" give me my security back and that he'll "have to talk to his partner about the rent" and that he'd get back to me the next day. after waiting almost 2 weeks of not hearing from either of them and trying to contact them, my calls are not being answered and my voicemails are not being returned. also, can i get the months rent for may that i had paid in advance? the building has been condemned and rendered completely unusable immediately after the fire, and the fire was no fault of mine. i just want to make sure that i try to get everything that i am entitled to. after talking to the police and fire departments about my situation and the fire itself, i was informed that both landlords have significant criminal histories in a neighboring state that includes larceny, using stolen credit cards, etc. i appreciate any and all advice that may come my way. the fire has caused an unbelievable disruption in my life to the point where i am now on temporary disability. i really don't want to have to deal with this other stuff right now.
thanks.
