Rental Car collection calls

I will try and simplify this and make it as brief as possible.

3 years ago after moving to Maui I ran over some debris in the road with a rental car. I didn't take the LDW because both my insurance and CC cover that. The car seemed OK so I continued on. Later I noticed somthing dripping from underneath the car. I promptly took the car back, filled out the paperwork and was advised I would hear back in 7-10 days. I never heard a word until 9 days ago at work. On Monday Oct. 4 I received a call from a collection company saying I owe over $6000 due to damage to the rental car from 3 years prior. I advised I am at work and cannot discuss personal situations on the phone here. The caller became adamant and talked over me letting me know it was going on my credit report the next day (it has yet to appear). She told me to transfer her to HR for verification of employment. I advised again I cannot discuss such matters during work hours and hung up. I received 3 more calls that week looking for me but I happened to not be around at the time. 1 final call came on Friday the 9th and got to my supervisor where she also explained not to call again during work hours.

Several months ago I started receiving calls from an unknown # I did not answer. The voicemail asked me to call this # and use reference # 'X'. They never stated their reason for the call or the company calling. I assumed it was a sales call. I now find out it's the same collection company. I have yet to receive any statement or call from the rental car company and no written correspondence from the collection company. They do have my correct address. My insurance is the same and would have covered it. My CC is the same and also would have covered it. The FTC 5 day written correspondence rule was broken. Aren't they supposed to state where they are calling from and/or their business when leaving a voicemail? 3 years and still no bill, no letters and only harassing phone calls.

Do I have any recourse in this situation? What should, or could I do?

Many thanks.

I'll second that. If, on the off chance it is a real collection agency, they have violated parts of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, namely the fact that once you inform them they have called a work number and that you cannot talk to them there, they cannot call you back at that number.

Get their info the next time they call (an address and callback number) then as stated, call the police and report it as a scam.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but I did a reverse number lookup and found the company's name, address and website. It does say they are a collection company and have been in business since 1982 (there abouts). They are NOT registered with the BBB and the BBB has given them a rating of D- on the BBB website. I have already filed a complaint with the FTC as well.

thanks,
