Restrictive endorsement legal in Massachusetts?

Does anyone know if restrictive endorsement on a check is legal in MA. My landlord sent a check, with *returned security* in the memo section, and it is only part of the security deposit, and I am sueing him in small claims. I just want to know if I can cash the check or not, or if I should add *partial* before *returned security*, and cash it.

Restrictive endorsements are on the BACK of the check - the memo section is meaningless.

"Offer in compromise" wording is much more common
