Hey, I was just wondering what is a reasonable retainer fee to start paperwork for divorce. I live in Mobile County, Alabama. My attorney sayed he would charge $4k for my contested divorce. But I can't afford that all up front. He said he normally charges $1000 retainer/+ filing fee($163) to start the paperwork/file it/ and served. But in my financial situation he said he would work with me. Just let him Know Monday what I could come up with. My problem is I don't wanna take out to large of a loan($1k) if I could get it started cheaper (say $300+filing fee). I'm just confused by Him "working with me" on payment but not saying " Hey I cant do this for no less than $X". Its kinda like he's holding out. But IDK maybe I'm just being to cynical. Sooo... does anyone have a fair idea what I should "offer" cause I dont want to have to file for bankruptcy after this divorce. The smallest loan I can take out the better... for me and my son. I just really need this divorce to get going ASAP.

Sometimes I wish I was still in the Military... Cause they sure knew how to look out for there own. If anyone knows anything about possible vet assistance in a case like this that would be much appreciated also...

There are very few legal services that assist anyone with divorces.

Why not offer the lawyer $400 plus the fee to get started?

That means you need about $565 to get the ball rolling.

If he/she balks, you could say, I guess I could try and get another $100, but I'm recently discharged and tapped out!!!!

Can you help a starving vet that loves his son?
I've got no one else to turn to.
Trust me, I'm good for the rest.
I'll make a payment plan with you and pay you every week.

Freedom ain't never free!!!

Thanks Army... You really know how to tactfully reply to any situation. Thats seems to me a fair and ligitamate way to put things. I really hope he goes for it... Well I wont know unless I ask. Thanks agian for everything... and keep me in your prayers. I feel God has something great planned somewhere down the line... either for me or my son. THANKS!!

Aww, shucks, usafsmith20!

No problem, just try to be a great dad for that little boy.

God wants us all to be great!

I'll have my wife's prayer group pray for you and the boy, too!

Those little old lady's have a direct line to God!
