I have a Four year old and she hasnt seen her real father in over a year and he wants to sign his rights away and my husband wants to adopt ....The lawyer i spoke to on the phone told me it would be at least 1500 dollars to do this ...i would pay it gladly but is alot to do at one time and im afraid to wait bc he might change his mind ....Is there any way to do it myself or for cheaper ....any help would be great

You really should go with an attorney for this. You want to make sure everything is done properly, in case there's a problem afterwards.

And honestly - many adoptions (even consensual stepparent adoptions) run into the thousands....$1500 is REALLY cheap!

Have you asked other attorneys if they'll consider a payment plan? Many will!

Parents can't just sign away their parental rights and responsibilities.

Many parents want to do so, but it is bigger than getting daddy or mama to say yes, I'll sign!

And, as Proserpina said, it isn't going to be cheap.

If a lawyer said $1,500, get it in writing.

In fact, no matter what you decide, get a WRITTEN RETAINER.

That will lay out what the lawyer will TRY to achieve for you, and what you will be charged to do so.

Frankly, I don't think you can get it done for $1,500.

Most adoptions run around $10,000 (on average).

Some go much higher.

It all depends on how long it takes, and if the state puts up resistance.

If you've ever received state support payments for your child, trust me, the state will often fight an adoption; until someone pays them back the support.

Anyway, start the discussions with an attorney.

Make sure you know how much it'll cost.

But, you need to think why you believe an adoption is good for your child.

You need not explain that here, just make sure it is about the child, and not about you.
