I am renting a room with no lease or security deposit. We just have a simple verbal agreement of $500 per month and a extra $80 for utilities & internet access. There have been several problems during my residency here and finally when I went to get the rent money on June 1st (I usually paid cash) I realized that there were unauthorized transactions to my bank account. I was left $200 short of my $500 rent. I talked to the husband whom I pay the rent to. I gave a verbal agreement that I would pay $300 on mon June 1st and the remaining $200 on wed June 3rd when I got my next paycheck. Everything seemed fine. I got home that night and gave him the money.
The next day his wife accused me of stealing money from her bank account and came up with some bizarre conspiracy of using one of their credit cards to purchase something online and sell it for the rent money. She told me when I got home from work on Tues June 2nd that I either had to leave that night or she would go to the police and file a police report and press charges then I would go to jail. I never took anything from these people and volunteered my information by making a photocopy of my Drivers License and providing my phone number for her police report. I told the husband that I could either give him the other $200 and stay till July 1st or he could give me my money back and I'd leave the next night. She said that I was not going to get any of my money back because it was their money that I allegedly stole from them. So I wrote up a deal stating that I paid $300 rent and that it should cover 2 weeks of rent($250) and $50 towards utilities and I would move out by June 15th.
My question is what are my rights as a lodger in this house? Can they try to make me leave sooner than June 15th? Can I leave sooner and get some of or all my money back with the exception of the 1st week of the month? This situation makes me so angry but Im not sure what my rights as a tenant residing in the private home of the owners. I hear her in the morning yelling about how she wants me out now. If they ask me to leave can I ask for my money back minus the rent up to the date of my departure?
