Road Trip?

My friends and I are planning a road trip this summer. We are going from Thousand Oaks, California to New York City and back. We've got a car and everything we need. The only problem is that I will only be 17 while the rest of them will be 18.

I need to know if there are any laws that will prohibit me from going across state boundaries without a parent or guardian. We all have drivers licenses and we can all drive others legally.

I also would like to know what kind of liability there would be for me or my parents if there was an accident.

my dad says he's liable for me until I'm 18, which is true.
So basically he's trying to protect himself and the rest of the family by not letting me go because he doesn't want to risk a lawsuit (possible car accident?).

That would be about the size of it, yes. And the law is not going to force him to change his mind. If he says no, you can't go, then no, you can't go.

Whether he actually would have any liability is immaterial. You are under age, and he holds all the cards.
