I have been living in a newly renovated NYC apartment since July last year, and suffered recurring mice infestation. Recently, things have escalated and we caught/poisoned 12 mice in 2 weeks. I have a 6 month old baby and am concerned by this health hazard.
The source of the problem is my downstairs neighbor whose apartment is in a complete state of disrepair (I think he has mental health problems). His apt door is continually open with a stench and trash coming out to the corridor.
My landlord is apparently trying to evict and the case has been before the courts, for a while now, but no telling how long this will take. There is an exterminator that comes once a month, but this does little to help (the downstairs neighbor also does not let him in).
In the meantime, what options do I have from a legal point of view? I am paying a lot of rent for this apartment where the living conditions are currently not sanitary. Any advice much appreciated
