Roommate refuses to give me my belongings

I moved in with a friend in oct for less than a month, I rarely stayed there. I left for a wknd intending to return but my circumstances proved otherwise. He informed me I couldn't get my belongings until I paid $500 for the month I was there. I haven't had the money, now he tells me hes gotten rid of my stuff. Is this legal?

It isn't a question of legal.
It's a civil matter between you and your former friend.
Your remedy is to bring a lawsuit in the proper county or city small claims court.
You must be able to prove the value of the goods the person allegedly destroyed, discarded, or sold.

Your "friend" might in turn sue you for the money he believes you owe him.
