Roommate that prevents roommate from finding a replacement

I have an issue where I've been searching for someone to take over 1/2 of the lease that I'm on.
I had lost my job and due to my former employer currently being under investigation for not paying into UI, am not collecting unemployment, and have gone on several job interviews but with unsuccessful results. I had found 10 people that wanted to take over the lease, pending meeting the roommate. He would stay in his room and pretend not to be there when I'd have people over to see the apartment, and when the potential roommates would try to reach him to meet up with him, he would ignore them.
He did absolutely nothing to cooperate with my attempts at finding a roommate more suited to pay rent.
Finally, at the end of November, I moved all my belongings out and told him that with the space empty it should be really easy for him to find a roommate. I set up 5 appointments for him that evening, and he did not confirm them so nothing happened.
He's not communicated anything with me and I believe he's going to keep the place to himself and sue me for the unpaid rent.
I have emails from people asking me why my roommate hasn't gotten back to them, and it would be very clear in a court of law that he did nothing to cooperate in the process of finding someone with income that could pay rent.
I'm fully paid for all the time I lived there, but finally ran out of cash because of this loser.
So, how much should I worry? It's in NJ and the unpaid rent would be much more than 3,000 so small claims court is out of the question I believe.
