In October of 07 I moved my sons belongings into a storage unit in a different county from where I lived. We originally paid 2 months rental because I knew it would be difficult to remember to pay and really wasnt sure how long we would need the unit. My son came to us and ask about his belongings. We had totally forgotten about the rental and hadnt paid since Nov of 07. I just received a certified letter , first delivery attempt on the 18 th of March. I wasnt able to pick the letter up untill the 21 of March.
The letter stated i had 14 days from the date of the letter to pay my bill or the contents would be auctioned. On the letter at the top it was dated March 1. 08 and that the property would be auctioned March 15, 08. The post office according to the tracking number on the certified mailed clearly shows they didnt mail the letter untill the 11th of March , 10 days after they said they did. My sons property was auctioned on the 15th. Surely if i had received notice I would have more then gladly paid the rental to save my sons belongings. Did the storage unit rental company illegally seize my sons belongings and how would I go about trying to be compensated for at least the value of the items? Any help is greatly appreciated .

Yes, none of what they did was legal.

There had to be a hearing first. Sue their butts. YOu have them on a due process violations for starters. Good luck.
