Medical Malpractice Settlements?

We recently lost our case and now face in fees form the opposing side. During the expanation of fees we discovered that they had offered us a settlement which we were never informed of by our attorneys. Our attorneys have to at least inform us of the offer don't they? What are our options? We would have accepted the settlement and now we lost the case and owe this huge sum of money that we do not have! Help please.....thank you.
