Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Shoplift, CA, Petty theft, 1st offense, no police

Did the stupidest thing in my life that I am deeply ashamed of and will forever regret doing. Caught shoplifting for item under $50. No police was involved and I had to sign a few forms. LP police has given me a court date (which is odd because arent police supposed to do that?) They say the court date will come in the mail if not I should call the police, and a civil demand will come. So what should I do at the moment? If I do a diversion program, will I still have a criminal record?

You contact an Attorney to plan you legal options. In the diversions I have heard of once you complete program your case is dimissed so no conviction record. Again discuss this with your Attorney

so even though police werent involved, im still most likely going to court? is there any chance i only get the civil demand?

Yes there is that chance but since they told you that a court datre was coming I assume they plan to file criminal charges

For low dollar thefts, LP usually will not involve the police at the time of the incident unless you do not have ID. If you have ID and are cooperate they will file their own charges at a later date. You will receive a court notice in the mail and will have to appear.

Pay your civil demand, obey your trespass notice and steal no more.
