I was caught shoplifting from a namebrand supermarket yesterday for a small sum under $20. I'll put it out there that I know what I did was stupid, and don't plan on doing it again, not that anyone really cares about that. Anyways, I was approached by store loss prevention, they brought me to the surveillance room took my license and took down my information. They took the items I had stolen and told me that I was welcome into the store again but if was ever caught again I would be prosecuted. I signed a release of my information and left. The woman from store loss prevention said that the information provided was for the stores database and that she was bound by confidentiality. does this mean this record will just stay in the store?

I am worried here about the possibility of police involvement even though they were not called. Also though she didn't say anything about any type of fine, is it likely that I will get one? I am very nervous about this whole thing, if anyone has answers it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok several things to address here
not that anyone really cares about that
Your wrong we do care! Not sur eif you have posted elsewhere but sadly thos eother informational sites often times judge people like you or become sarcastic. Here we dont! We believe good people make bad choices. Not that you are a bad person. Read our Mission statment in top right hand corner of main page
does this mean this record will just stay in the store?
Yes and no. If the store is asubscriber to a retail theft database then your name will likely be entered there. This info is only viewable to other subscribers.

Legally they have until the statute of limitations runs out to file criminal charges. In the real world if they did not file at time of stop they arent going to most likely.
Also though she didn't say anything about any type of fine, is it likely that I will get one?
Probably. Retailers lose over 15 billion each year just to shoplifting. No tonly that it cost well over $1000,000.00 a year for a store to do what it can to prevent shoplifting. Civil Demand helps recoups some of that cost. I would be very surprised if they did not send a Civil Demand letter to your home

thank you for answering! The thing I worry most about is definatly the police involvement and I just don't know how long I should worry about it. Would the database only effect job opportunities if I attempt a retail job? Its just I am in college and looking for a career in medicine so that shouldn't hurt when I look for grad schools and careers?

I know you want absolute answers. I cannot give those. The retail theft database is only accessable to subscribers. I cant say if schools subscribe or not. Working retail is out of the question if the retailer is subscriber. No I dont know who subscribes I tried to get that info but was shut down by database.
