My sister just admitted to me that she stole something earlier today. It was from a major retailer. She took it out of the box, pocketed it, and left the store. She was never suspected (that she knows of) or caught. She left and came home. I am thinking the item was worth about 150 or 200 dollars!

She swears she has never stolen anything before and doesn't really know why she did it. She is worried sick and scared out of her mind. She is very much scared out of ever stealing again. My question is could they possibly have her on tape and somehow track her down? I know nothing of theft or shoplifting or how stores work in pursuing those who have stolen things. At first she said she didn't even think about that and is now freaked beyond belief because she left the box behind. Like I said she wasn't caught, but is there anything else she needs to be worried about as far as ways of them finding her and pursuing her?

If they have her on tape its odd that they did not stop her at time. However to answer her question yes. There are several means they could use to find out who she is and ask Police to arrest her. Tell her she has about two years to wait for that knock on her door

I agree that I would think if they have it on tape they would have stopped her upon leaving. She stashed the box behind some other items. I think she is afraid of them finding the box, looking back on the tapes, seeing her and somehow tracking her down. She is really freaking out, which is good in a way, she should. But, I am currently trying to talk her out of going back down there and trying to dispose of the box somehow. I am really scared for her, not just of what they could charge her with, but of her current state, she is skaing and everything. She can't even function. I know she just wishes she could undo it but sadly I know she can't.

Get her somone to talk to like a counselor or therapist. She should not return to look for box or she will risk arrest. She should however return the item. She can do so by mailing it with no return address. Even a letter would be fine long as she does not give her name etc
