so i just made a very bad decision by trying to do this, i got caught, went into a holding cell for the night, then was set free with a sheet telling me my court date. This is my first offense and i am not sure what to expect from court. also if my parents find out about this they will probably not pay for my college tuition anymore and might kick me out of the house, so is there any mail sent to your home address for this? also about public defenders, i cannot afford a lawyer so i should be able to get one for free? how do i meet with them? and what will be the consequences after court? thanks for the help.

Far as court possibly we cannot say for certain. However I can say yes to a letter of Civil Demand from store. This is a Civil fine and that letter can come anywhere within a few days to months
also about public defenders, i cannot afford a lawyer so i should be able to get one for free?
When you go to court plead not guilty or stand mute then request Publice defender the Judge will instruct you from there. It would be wise to talk to several Attorneys before hand to arm yourself with knowledge. Many offer free consultations take them up on it.
what will be the consequences after court? thanks for the help.

You can discuss consequences with your Attorney. One option you should bring up is Diversion

how do i find attorneys? i have no idea how court works. what does pleading not guilty and requesting a public defender accomplish? also what happens if i do not do that? and if i do it, how long will the case last? also would the consequence be a fine? sorry for all the questions and my inexperience, im just very worried about getting this done and keeping my parents in the dark about this

what if i cannot afford a lawyer? i am on my own on this and my part time job only does enough to pay for books and supplies.

what happens if i do plead guilty? there is a video recording of the incident.

i also did not get a civil demand from the store, since i am going to court does that mean i dont get one?

when i plead not guilty, will they ask if i want a public defender? also by pleading not guilty and getting a public defender, will it erase the criminal record? also what will a criminal record do to my career?

Thats hard to say. We don't know what cost (if any) the Public Defender will be. Fines from court should be less than $500.00 There "might" be additional monies for classes court "might" order. Civil Demand (Civil fine unrelated to ocurt fines) should be around $300.00

im sorry for all the questions but i dont get how pleading not guilty even with the video proof would make things better. wouldnt that make the judge agitated and give a worse sentence?

Your not paying attention. I know your scared. If you plead guilty Judge will then commence to sentence you. This means no plea deal just whatever Judge wants. Not a good plan. Pleading not guilty will not anger Judge its normal procedure so you can have time to plan your defense or arrange plea deal with DA

so basically pleading not guilty will give me time to talk to the public defender and clear the record?
