I was caught shoplifting in (dept. store) today, I took one pair of earrings on a $30 pack of 3 pairs, so I technically stole $10. when I exited the store they asked me to cime back in, I obeyed gave them back the earrings, filled out paperwork explained what happened etc. police showed up, handcuffed me and asked the same questions pretty much. they banned me from (store) and released me. I am waiting for some in the mail from (store) about paying them back and I have a court date next month. this is my first offence on a clean record. what could happen? I am 19 btw also, will they notify my work? I am a cashier at a store.

You need to get a lawyer. If you cannot afford one, the court will appoint one for you. Ask your lawyer about ACD or diversion. Plead not guilty. You should get in the mail from the store a letter for a civil demand fine. You need to be sure to pay it. It is always "possible" your employer will eventually find out about this one way or another.

is it possible that since its my first offence I can get away easy? I dont have the money to pay some crazy fine and I don't want to go to jail

You will need to pay the civil demand fine that will be requested in your letter from the store. I don't see any jail time.

ACD or Diversion is getting off easy! Jail is very very unlikely. I work in retail theft field and jail on a first offense is very very very did I say very? rare!!!!

The letter you receive is likely going to ask you to pay $200-300. If you pay it there shouldn't be any other fine to follow.
As for your employment, your incident might get you into the retail theft database and your employer might eventually find out through that, but they would otherwise have no knowledge of any of this.
