Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Shoplifting at Kohls, will i go to jail?

I got caught shoplifiting at Kohls. I was let go from the police officers because I had my twin boys with me. I know a lot of people will respond negativly to that, but I made a bad decision. My 3 kids have no pants, I lost my job, my husband had a pay cut. So no excuse I know, I just made a poor choice. Anyway I was not taken to jail but I was arrested and given a ticket. I have court in 20 days. Does anyone know what will happen to me? It was almost $1000 worth of stuff, but not quite $1000. I am 29. Has this happened to you or anyone you know and if so what will happen to me? I also live in Scottsdale, AZ. I did contact a lawyer today who said it was not a felony, since my court appearance it for a city court versus a superior court. I can not afford him, he is $3500 so are public defenders as effective?

you are well past the felony level for theft. This can mean prison and very likey at least jail time. You need to talk to an Attorney whether you hire him or not. Many offer free consultations. Get as many as you can with as many Lawyers as you can. Ask lots and lots of questions. Then you can be armed with knowledge when you meet with Public defender. I would also suggest you enroll in an Anti shoplifting course "before" court! This will show Judge both action and remorse on your part. Always good! We can recommend such a program if you like.
