I was falsely accused of stealing $3 in lip balm from Sears. I had put the lip balm in my cart along with the other items I was purchasing. My order totaled more than a $100, but as I emptied my cart, I didn't see the lip balm. It was until I walked out of the store, that a LP approached me, and accused me of stealing. I told her it was an oversight on my part. And really if I was stealing lip balm I would have put it in my purse, not the cart! Also, it was only 3.00---especially since I had just spent $150. I have never been in this situation before, and it was frustrating, because you know deep down inside it was an honest mistake, and you're treated as a criminal! They asked for my personal information, and I refused to give them my social security number or sign the paperwork they typed up. They said it would just be a ticket , and that I was banned from the store for a year!!! Ridiculous I thought. My question is, can they ban me for something so trivial? And I am a sears card holder, will they cancel my credit card?

Re: Shoplifting at Store name

More bad news. Yes they can ban you not only that they can fine you Civilly (expect a letter in a few weeks) and they can charge you criminally meaning court

Re: Shoplifting at Store name

No, I won't be charged criminally. The police were not called, and I was told I would receive a ticket for 10x the amount of the lip balm...$30.00. My most important question was regarding my store credit card. Would they cancel that?

Re: Shoplifting at Store name

1st off you don't know you wont be charged. Your assuming so. I agree but its not a guarantee. We cannot say if they will cancel your credit card if your banned for life it isnt much use anyhow. They might we cant say. Read the terms of your agreement with them on this.

You'd be suprised how many people buy large amounts, or have large amounts of money and still steal.
They can ban you for whatever they want, its their store.

Re: Shoplifting at Store name

I once stopped two men for stealing two ball caps valued under $25.00 each. Combined each man had over two grand in cash
