My jurisdiction is: Santa Cruz, California

I was recently arrested for shoplifting less than 50 dollars worth in merchandise at an Urban Outfitters in Santa Cruz. This is my first arrest and/or conviction of any crime. I am 19 years old.

My court date is set for early December and I have no idea as to what I should do in order to prepare for it.

Do i really need to hire a lawyer?
How much would that cost me? How would I get around to doing so? What about a public attorney?

What should I plead? I know there are a multitude of shoplifting cases out there - what is the usual outcome?

Thanks for your help

Yes you should seek a Lawyer. You are looking at criminal charges and thus a criminal record. A criminal record can keep you out of school and certain jobs to start off. This can be life changing dont fool around consult a Lawyer
