Hello, I was charged with Shoplifting from Wal-Mart. (This location was in GA) My friend and I had attempted to steal a PC game entitled "Game name removed." The retail value of this item was under $40.00

This is my first (and last) offense. I have never stolen anything, nor do I have anything on my record. As of Monady, I am 21, so I am an adult. (We were both arrested on Sunday)

My friend and I were caught stealing the item, and we were put into a room by the security at this Store name. We filed a criminal trespass report (I believe it is called this, it says we can never go back into another Store name every again) and were arrested and sent to jail.

At the jail, we were had mug shots taken, and out finger prints taken. We received "tickets" (or citations, I'm not sure of the wording.) and were placed in a holding cell. My family came and bonded us out, and I have a court date set for September 3rd, 2009 at 9am.

My question to you is, what can I do to minimize this sentence as much as possible? I understand a price must be paid, and I'm willing to pay that price, but this will most likely make me lose my job if this get placed on my permanent record. I saw a lawyer who will represent me, but it is going to cost me $3000 which is alot of money that I really can't afford right now.

Do I need a lawyer? I've completly admitted guilt to the cops and Store name, but I've heard No-lo will help me. Is this true?

Any help/advice you can give would be very much appreciated.

Your post has been edited for your protection. There is no need to name store. This can ID you on this site and give the Store, DA etc info they can use

I forgot to mention, I stole the item in Gwinnett county, but I'm being charged in the cities municipal court.

Is that a good thing? And I apologize about the wall of text. I figured more info was better than none.

Thanks for the editing, I didn't think about that. Even still, I've admitted everything to both the store and the police, so I imagine that anything I say on here won't effect me too much, but I don't know.

I'm new to this stuff.

That may be true but this site is here to help you not help you incriminate yourself. I cannot speak to which is better I suspect neither. Charge is what it is regrdless of city. The only difference might be how kind or not Judge is.

In my opinion, (and once again, I have no idea how these things actually work) I feel like I should plead Guilty and just accept whatever the judges gives me. I've heard that in GA you can get up to a year for a misdemeanor, but I hope to God, as this is my first offense, I do not receive this sentence.

I guess I'll just wait and see what happens.

NO! do not just walk in and plead guilty. Even though you say you are guilty why just take what comes? You have options. Talk to your Lawyer about Diversion as possible option

So, I called the courthouse where I'm being tried at (Not sure if that's the correct term) and apparently in Gwinnett county GA , if you are a first time offender, you get a chance to do a "Pre Trial Diversion" and you can do this on the day you go to court. They give you two options, one is the Diversion and the other is to be represented by a public defender.

Figured I'd share that bit of info with you, I'm not sure if it will help anyone.
