today i was caught for shoplifting a $30 of perfume from a store in California. This is my first run in with the law and i am a minor, so i have a few questions and concerns. As the police were called, i was given a chance to ask the officer a few questions. Because it was a small amount of merchandise taken and it was given back, and because this is my first offense, he said that it was likely to be reduced to an infraction in court, though as of now it is a misdemeanor. How would i make sure that this happens? Next, would a lawyer or attorney be something necessary in my case? Next, as college applications are coming up, and my getting into the colleges of my choice is something of utmost importance, how will this affect that decision? Due dates for applications will be before my court date i believe... Lastly, because i am a minor, i was told that although this will appear on my record as petty theft, that it would be removed when i turned 18. is this true?
