I live i CA and I've run into the problem of not being able to afford food. I do work but almost everything is going towards rent and outstanding medical debt. I don't qualify for food stamps or any other programs. The local food bank shut down and the few that are left can't supply enough to live on. I feel stuck because I need to eat but I feel like the only real option left is stealing it. What's the potential outcome of getting caught?
One benefit of stealing the food is that you will be served free meals in jail.
You could potentially be charged with a felony if you enter a store with the intent to steal. It isn't worth the risk.
A better option is to contact local shelters and charity organizations such as United Way. There is assistance available, you just have to find it. What county do you live in?
Depending n the circumstances of the theft you could be charged with a felony and face prison that would be worst case. Least impact would be no criminal charges but asked t pay civil demand. Since you clearly have prior intent you qualify for felony charges. The site below may have additional info as well
