i live in California and was caught shoplifting at target I don't know why I did it I had money but anyways I was caught lifting a phone case I was planning on stealing more than 3 but I thought about it and thought it was wrong so just took the one case which was less than $40 they stopped me at the door and took me to the security room I gave up the case and my id as they had asked for it they said they weren't going to call the police but they had asked for my address does anyone know what happens it was less then $40 and I know it was wrong I even offered to pay for it when they had me back there I just don't want to be in even more trouble can someone please help me.

If they asked for your address, you will probably receive a civil demand letter through the mail. Since no police were called & you pay the civil demand that will probably be the end of it. However, your name (unless you are a minor) might be put in a retail theft data base that member companies can access.

If you are a minor, you need to tell your parents.

Thank you and no I am not a minor I am 18

I am a Retail Theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. You can expect a letter from the store (you should not have named especially this one) Law firm asking you for anywhere from $50.00 to $!000.00 in accordance to Civil Demand laws. Pay this and its over fail to pay and there could be serious long term consequences.
