Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Shoplifting in IA

As the subject insinuates, I was caught shoplifting in IA. Dumb. Really, really dumb. Obviously. The total value of the goods was $185.00, which is 5th degree theft, and only a simple misdemeanor. Since I committed the crime and feel as though I should suffer the consequences, I was thinking of not hiring an attorney and representing myself. Since I have a clean record and am a relatively good kid (short of this whole criminal incident snafu), I think (perhaps sophomorically) that I'll be able to get out of this with a large fine, and some community service.

My question is, should I invest in legal counsel? Should I risk jail time? I can't afford an attorney as I am a student (19 yrs old), and obviously, my parents aren't aiding with the expense. Would it be completely pathetic for me to walk into court and ask the judge if there are any diversion programs, myself? Or does an attorney need to say it for it to be legitimate?

I don't know. Basically, I'm wondering if an attorney would be worth the investment, or if I should just belly up the money and try to move on.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Under no circumstances shoud you defend yourself. Many Attorneys offer free consultations take them up on it. Ask if Diversion is optionis your case.

I would call the courthouse several days before your court case and ask how they are going to proceed. Sometimes they have programs in place where you can work out a deal with the states attorney before hand. Diversion for shoplifting is much like the alcohol classes for first time alcohol offenses.

I would also start talking to different attorney's in your area. They will be pricey, but can keep this off your record and out of jail. A theft conviction on your record is a scarlet letter for seven or more years.
