I was 17 when I shoplifted at a store. A couple men associated with the store stopped me (I did not run) and I signed a few papers with my information in their presence and another when a policeman showed up. The policeman was extremely nice but I do remember him reading my rights. I think (I was extremely shook up at the time and don't remember everything exact) the other things I signed were the agreement to pay the fine and stay out of the store. At first, the couple men that stopped me threatened to arrest me since neither my parents were answering their phones, but once the policeman got there, he let me leave with no problem and drive home myself. I wasn't arrested at all. I did pay the fine in the amount of time they allowed and got a letter from the Juvenile dept. that recommended a 3 hour class on shoplifting instead of going to court. I attended the class. My question is..was I convicted? I've heard that in order to be convicted, you must go before a jury/to court, which I did not do. I would really appreciate getting the correct answer for sure, though, because I really want to answer this question honestly on college applications. Also, I will not be 18 by the time I apply to colleges, so I know that it cannot be taken off my record (if there is something on it?) quite yet. Thank you

It sounds like you were offered and received an ACD. this should not show on your record and if it does will show as dismissal. You are correct in order to be convicted (in most cases) you must go to court! However you waived your right to court trial by agreeing to take class. What you should do is ocntact the court and find out the disposition of your case to be certain.
