I am trying to learn more about a shoplifting charge that could affect a teacher in Arizona if they have no prior offenses. Amount tried to take from store total was $20.00 and person paid for the items upon leaving the store and was very apologetic.

Could a charge such as this one affect current certified employment status and/or become an issue of being re-hired or hired at another jobsite?

This person has a court date scheduled, but has not been to court to find out if it will stay a misdemeaner or dropped to a disorderly conduct/petty theft charge.

I checked the school district guidelines as far as hiring and fingerprinting and there was nothing in those guidelines about this type of charge.

Please write back if you have any information about the above. It is time sensitive and I know this person really needs to find out more about it before they go to court.

I'm guessing this already happened and it would be interesting to hear what happened. With no prior record I wonder if the store persisted with the case with full restitution made and waht seems to be a first time offender. I've read in places where there is "adjudication withheld" and the offender must complete a probationary period and success results in a complete dismissal of the charges. For petty theft, I like that law...
