I was at a very large store at the mall. They caught me shoplifting $12 worth. I'm over 18. I had no ID on me. When they took me to the back they asked me a bunch of questions and took my picture and made me sign some harmless looking forms. There were no cops, and they said I'd get something through the mail, and I'll have to pay between 50-500 in a months time. They know my name and college. That is the only true information they have about me other than the picture.
When they find out the address is fake, what are they likely to do?
Should I turn myself back in, or will it blow over since it's only $12?
Are cops ever alerted? or is it just the debt collection agency?
Any comments would be appreciated, I am very distressed.
