I got caught shoplifting from A Dept Store in NY yesterday for merchandise worth $45.
This is the first time this has ever happened to me.
I am 40.
In my case, I did price tag changed for a necklace.
I paid the price tag changed necklace and another full price ring at cashier and I got stopped over at the exit.
I got taken into their security room.
They made me sign two forms, details sheet, copy my ID and took my picture. They told me that I will have to pay retail price for the price tag changed necklace (they will send me the bill for that, how much will be?). Also, I cannot go back to the store any more. I fully co-operated with the Loss Prevention and no police was called. I am really ashamed and guilty. They didn't mention anything about cops being involved as of yet. If I receive the letter or bill that want me to pay with certain amount, should I pay (Is this the fine from Civil Demand)? If I pay, is the case closed? Are they gonna inform the cops? Can they still inform the cops? I am scared about the cops. Is this going to be a permanent record on my name? Will I need go to the court? I feel very embarrassed and regret. Thank you for all and any advice , I truly appreciate it.

Just pay the fees and costs they will demand when they call you.
They often allow you to make payments on the fee, if you don't have it all.
Expect it to be around $500, give or take.
Do that, the cops won't be called.
Stay out the store FOREVER.

how long will I receive the mail?

Thank you for helping me. Usually how long will I receive the mail? Will the mail tell me to go to the court instead paying the fines?

I am a retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. The Civil Demand letter can come in days or even months on occasions. There many factors that play into this that can alter timeline for letter. If you grow concerned contact store ask for number to their Civil Recovery service and ask them if they have your name to request Civil Demand

Just be patient and wait on a letter or a phone call, patience please.
It could be a week, or two, maybe a month; as the holiday season is upon us.
Trust me, you won't be forgotten, they want their money.
You do as they say, no cops will ever be called.

Thank you, Army Judge. I really don't want to go to the court for this matter or any cops involved. I got my lesson, never do this again. Thanks for your advise.
