Hi,
Okay so I want to start by saying I have never had any criminal charge on me in my past. I am over 18. So today at a large retail store I was pulled into a room by an employee after going through the self checkout. I thought I had scanned everything in my basket but the machine didn't scan a few items that I had put in my bag. I explained this to them and they took my id and let me go. I never signed any documents or anything I was just simply told I wasn't allowed back for 24 hours. They didn't say anything other than that. I read cases where people were mailed a fine but I wasn't told about this. What should I expect? Thank you!

You may have gotten away with IT, this time.
Nevertheless, you'll be worrying about what other consequences IT may bring you.
You'll have to wait and see if the other shoe drops, mate.
By the way, the "I forgot to scan it" excuse, or any excuse is tantamount to CONFESSING the commission of a crime.

If you should ever ACCIDENTALLY or FORGETFULLY again, and IT somehow occurs again, the smart money says you remain silent.

Name, address, date of birth, along with being calm and polite.

The smarter money says you scan EACH and EVERY item before placing any item into a bag.

I always use self checkout and have never once had IT happen to me.

I don't know what YOU can expect. I can only tell you what happens to most people who post their shoplifting tales on this and other sites.

It's possible that you will get a letter from the store HQ demanding that you pay some money to put the matter to rest. $200 or $300 seems to be the range.

You can pay it or not pay it. That's your choice. Just keep in mind that, if you don't pay, the store owner has the option of reporting it to the police and getting you criminally charged.

I am a Retail Theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. I would say there is a strong likelihood you will get a letter of civil demand. Your defense it was an accident isnt likely going to be believed. I suggest you pay civil demand but thats your call below are two links that may help you decide.

The thing is that they never said anything about getting anything in the mail. She just said they are entering my information in their system and that I wasn't allowed back for 24hrs and I was free to go. I would assume she would have informed me about the fine?

You can assume what you wish but neither of us knows for sure. However its is VERY common to send such letters to all theft suspects
