i was with my friend who got caught shoplifting 2 dog tags.. we're both 16. the security guard took us too a room. He said he was gonna call our parents and they could decide whether he calls the police. but he didnt. He also said that we were gonna get sued for wasting his time. then another security took our name adress and DOB. he asked for my mates ID, he didnt want mine, but my mate didnt have any. He gave us a copy of the form he filled out saying we're banned from all store name. At the bottom of the form it says we MAY recieve a letter from their solicitors to sue us for the cost to repair the product or the cost for the investigation and other things along those lines. the other security then took us to the counter and my friend payed for the items worth £9. Since they caught us straight away and made us pay for the item which wasnt very expensive, what are the chances that theyll sue us?
if they do, how much are they likely to sue, and how long would it take for the letter to come?

This is a US based site so we ar enot familar with laws across the pond. However here is US a retailer may not seek Civil demand (in most states) or even charge criminally if the subjects were allowed to pay for items. Keep any reciept you got for this payment as you cou7ld use it to fight suit. In mean time contact a local Attorney or look up code for Civil Demand

oh i didnt know it was a US based site. someone suggested it to me. oh well. lifes tough

Techinally there was no theft since you were allowed to pay for item(s) However much depends on how your Civil Demand statutes are written. If any paperwork you have has the law code you can google it and find out

It is very unlikely you will hear from them again. The cost of an investigation to them is £0, as no additional costs were incurred to the company in question, as you paid for the goods and the security guards in this situation would be there anyway.
