My son is 17 and was picked up for shoplifting with a fried. He did not have any items on him, but was told to be seen opening movies and his friend put them in his pants. (Two video movies). He has a court date in Sept. My question is this, should we have an atty and what type of punishment will be facing? Shouldn't the police have contacted his parents?

Yes he needs an Attorney he is facing criminal charges and criminal record. Long as the teen was released to a responsible adult it was ok

It depends on the state and how it all happened. At 17 some states do not have to call a parent. Get an attorney for your son if it is a first offense most likely you should be able to get it taken care of. I hate to sound rude don't think about what the police did or didn't do deal with your son and make sure he doesn't get a record. All too often we forget our kids made a mistake and try to solve what we think is a problem.

Not sure of the state but your son was most likely accused of acting in concert MUST ALSO HAVE THE STATE OF MIND NECESSARY TO COMMIT THE CRIME
