My 20 year old daughter was arrested for shoplifting in a mall near her college. She has to appear in court in 2 months. She has nothing prior to this. Do we have to have a lawyer? Is it possible she can be sent to jail?

Jail is not very likely. Now far as Attorney goes she is facing criminal charges that could impact her future employment and other matters. Yes she should get an Attorney and ask that Attorney about options like diversion if available

Yes unless she qualifies for and gets into Diversion. Which is why I strongly urge you to get her an Attorney
Thank you for your advice. What is the best way to go about picking an appropriate attorney? She is going to college about an hour away from where we live. I have never had to deal with an attorney before and do not want to make the wrong choice.
