Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft shoplifting

I was arrested for shoplifting from Macys with $284 of merchandise in my posession. I was given a notice about civil fines and told I would be contacted by a law firm within the next couple weeks. Then I was taken to jail, booked, and released with a court summons for next month. This is my first offense. Is this a felony? Will it stay on my record forever? I was wondering if I needed to get a lawyer for the court date and what might I expect to happen while I'm there?
