Yesterday, a friend and I both underage were caught shop lifting in Washington State.

My friend had $250+ in merchandise. I had under $150.

I was carrying an item of expense that she wanted but couldn't fit in her bag. As we walked out, I grabbed something and put it in my arm to make it noticeable we were shoplifting.

As to she has done this before and I was not aware of this being done until she asked me to put it in my bag. Being stupid enough, she walked out the door, and I stood in the door way debating if I was going to put it back and leave her. As my friend had already stepped out of the store, store security came up to us and grabbed both of our bags.

I was caught with her merchandise, and am taking the blame as to it looks horrible and they will not believe me if I say it was hers. We got banned for three years, fined, and parents called because we are minors.

'wWe have court dates. I do not know what to expect, if I should plead guilty or not guilty. I've been reading and it's getting confusing. I was told I didn't need an attorney because it wasn't a big deal. By the looks of it, (dept. store) can sue me after already giving me fines of $429.00, along with attending classes. Could community service be dealt for paying off my fine? I'm very weary on the subject and am doing my research, but your answers would surely help.

Plead NOT guilty, stop talking, request a public defender, and wait to meet him or her.
You need not prove your innocence. The state must prove your guilt.
This wasn't your first rodeo for either of you, so no need to be surprised.
You now know the reward inherent with the risks, and from this day forward, never engage in stupidity.

I am a Retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. You do as stated above plead NOT guilty and request Public Defender or hire an Attorney, this IS a BIG deal!! You can talk to Attorney about your not stealing really but don't expect that to go well. Ask about plea options like ACD or Diversion to reduce damage this will do to you. I also suggest you read this in regards to Civil Demand as there can be long term serious consequences to both you and your parents if you fail to pay http://www.parentnook.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=161&t=3934 I further suggest you remove store name from post to protect your self from yourself

I removed the name of the store for your protection. You need to talk to your parents and an attorney or public defender as noted & talk only to them.

Just to add.... it wasn't her stuff you were carrying out, it was the store's stuff. Your crime was complete before you even got close to the door.
Stop stealing and you will have less explaining to do.
