Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Shoplifting

What will happen for the first time shoplifting?

Nothing, even if you're convicted or cop a plea.
The worst is over.
You'll pay a fine, some fees, court costs, do some community service, take an honesty/ethics class, unsupervised probation, let time pass, it's over.

You'll get a demand letter demanding you pay another $500, give or take to a law firm on behalf of the store.

That's it, over, fini, the end. Don't steal their junk.

I am a retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. where the above is true there are still things to be concerned about

. Criminal record
. Retail theft databases
. Civil Demand (mentioned above also)
. Probation requirements
. Past criminal history (if any)
to name a few.
Talk to your Attorney about defense and/or plea options be sure to ask about ACD or Diversion as possible plea options

The value of the item(s) shoplifted can also make a difference. However, generally the "penalties" noted by the responders above will/can apply. You need to discuss your situation with a lawyer as noted.
