Hi,

I work for a very large cable company in the Southeast. My shift is 8am-7pm. We have at least 10 pages/programs we use...we work with all of them all day.

We have to answer the phone amonst other tasks and our phone is on the computer screen with headsets and time stamps. But we have another program that gives us 7 minutes to "officially" clock in,keep in mind we get paid overtime, etc in 15 minute increments.

If we are not on the phone by 8am, we get written up as tardy. It takes approx. 10 minutes to pull all of our programs up that we HAVE to have before we get on the phone. So to get on the phones by 8am, we need to come in at least 10-15 minutes before. Those 10-15 minutes, we are not getting paid! We get paid from 8am.

I thought we were supposed to start pulling up our programs at 8am. I thought that if I get there by 8am...that's my starting shift and that's when I I start pulling up those pages...when I start working.

Confusung huh? To make it short, if we are not on the phone by our beginning shift time; we get a tardy,,,but to do that we have to come in 10-15 minutes early...without pay. Can they do that?!!!!! The most people they fire have been fired for tardiness.

If you feel that you are not being paid for all the time you work, file a complaint for unpaid wages with your state DOL.

Thank you, I've thought of that but I need this job badly. I'm single.
I've brought it up several times...in a confused and question tone because I was written up. They are just so snide about it...Ever have that evil guy on your shoulder? Sometimes I just want them to get caught,,with no attachment to me of course! lol

You have a choice. You can file a complaint and get the money you are owed and have the system change, or you can do nothing and not have anything change. It's up to you whether 10 or 15 minutes a day is worth it to you. Note that you cannot legally be fired for filing a complaint with the DOL and if you are, that is a wrongful termination for which you have legal recourse.
