small claims, 500 cash stolen

Hello..so this happened in Nassau county, NY..

I moved out of a house I lived in for only 4 weeks. This was a verbally agreed rent-free situation. It was not kept clean by the live in landlord,
cat feces left all over and appliances never fixed. My own transportation kept me from being able to make it there and to work.

I text the landlord to say it wasn't going to work out and I was coming by to pick my things up Friday

He text me back saying our cleaning girl packed my things into a bag and left it on the front porch.

When I checked the bag everything was in there but my 500 cash that I had kept in the pocket of my nook protective case was gone.

I have tried to contact the landlord since then but he has not answered. I am going to file a police report and want to goto small claims court with this girl to get my money back, if I have a chance to.

Re small claims court - whether you win or not would depend on whether the judge believes you have enough proof that the girl took the money.

You should start with a police report and see if they get anywhere with it.
If you try small claims you have the best argument against the landlord who should not have touched our authorized anyone else to touch your property. You don't need to prove who took the money, rather who was responsible for it.
